Spring Training Notes for March 11th

-The Los Angeles Dodgers have reportedly made an offer to Cuban infield prospect Hector Olivera, according to Robert Murray of MLB Daily Rumors. Olivera is one of the last major names on the board, if not the last major name on the board. Things are apparently “heating up”. This comes less than 24 hours after Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reported that the San Diego Padres had an offer on the table worth $50 million. The Atlanta Braves had reportedly also been in contact with Olivera’s camp.

-The Texas Rangers announced that they would be seeking a third opinion for RHP Yu Darvish, who may need ucl reconstruction surgery. It was thought to be a triceps issue earlier, but escalated into either four months of rest, or according to two opinions, surgery.

-Chris Capuano, who many considered to be the most likely candidate to be the fifth starter for the New York Yankees, suffered a grade 2 quad strain. He’ll likely be out for Opening Day. Over his career, he’s gone 76-87 with a 4.28 ERA.

-The Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies played the bottom of the ninth inning in a spring training game even though Philadelphia had already won, retiring the Pirates in the top of the ninth with a 3-2 lead.

Washington Nationals LHP Gio Gonzalez took the “right meow” challenge, where he was able to work the phrase “right meow” into an interview eleven times. To see the video, click here.
